The project ‘The House Where the Summer Birds Lived’ is an attempt to reconstruct a family history spanning four generations—from the mid-1940s to the present day.
At the heart of this story lies the House: not merely a physical place, but an image associated with a sense of cosiness, closeness and inner freedom.
The project takes as its starting point a child’s perception — a way of seeing the world through details, imbuing them with a special, almost symbolic meaning.
By drawing on sensory memories, I seek to reconstruct not so much the events themselves as the experience of them — the experience of Home as a space of absolute safety. The work is based on a family archive and my personal experience of engaging with the past through photography.
By combining archival photographs with my own images, created using mixed media, I construct a narrative in which the past becomes tangible and physically present.
The artist’s book becomes a form in which fragments of family history come together to form a single narrative—both personal and mythologised. The title refers to the cyclical nature of existence and the idea of return—to that which defines the sense of home and continues to exist, despite the passage of time.
